SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Adobe Photoshop CS6

During my media lessons i edited my poster and magazines on a software called Adobe Photoshop CS6. This was my first time ever using this software however in the past i have used similar software to this such as Paint Shop Pro. Using Paint shop Pro i was able to learn a basis of what to do when editing different types of images. Having this foundation on Paint Shop Pro it was easy for me to transition over to Adobe Photoshop, as i already had the foundation skills to let me start with some basic editing techniques.

The first image i made was a  1950's dinner image, this was the very first image that I edited on Photoshop. I began with the background i set the resolution at 200 pixels per centimeter, this helps the image look good at any size and doesn't  make the image fuzzy.

Once i have put my background image on add a new layer which is where i get the car from. I grab the car image and drag it over to the background image. When this is done i still had the background from the car still in the picture. To get rid of this i used the magic wand tool and clicked on the white in the image. i then went to the task bar, edit, cut. This got rid of the white that i had clicked on but it didn't get rid of all the white in that image. There was still white in the windows which have to go to make the car image look authentic. This was the first time i used the magic wand on this software, however because i had previously used this skill in Paint Shop Pro it was easy for me to do it on here.

The next thing that i done on this poster was use the magnetic lasso tool. This tool was used on the 1960's boy. I couldn't use the magic wand tool because he wasn't on a plain background. I went around the boy and found out that as i done this i cut a little bit of his body out. To therefore avoid this i lowered the fethering so it wouldn’t cut out the mans foot. I then lightly went over it with the eraser tool to make sure it has a smooth finish.

The next step was to add the girl into the picture, i yet again used the magic wand tool to cut her out of the oroginal picture she was in. I used the magic wand tool because the girl was on a white background picture. This makes it easier to cut the woman out, however the woman's right shoulder was very light and the tool thought it was part of the background.
Once i lowered the feathering on the woman i went on to add the cola machine, this was fairly easy using many of the other skills that i had used before.I first used the magnetic lasso tool to easily go over the the machine and make it come out neatly. Once i had completed this stage i made sure the size was right for the picture and placed it at the back near the building so it would blend in a bit more.

The last thing that i did was was ad the man into the picture. At first he was facing the opposite way so i left it like this for the mean time and then i used the filing lasso tool and went over everything that include him in it. This cut him out but left some blank spaces in the picture which i used the magnetic lasso tool to get them out of the picture. I then flipped the picture horizontally so that he faced the opposite way to what he was already facing.
The next thing i worked on was my poster for deadly obsession, This poster was fairly easy and didn't take me a long time to complete. The first thing i did in this poster was make the back ground black so i had something good to work with when i added more images and words onto it. The film poster is made up but the name deadly obsession makes me think of something dark and sinister, therefore i used the colour black to signify this. The next step was to add one of the images onto the background. I done this by dragging it from the top tab and allowing it to go onto the background. I then edited the contrast of the woman's face to make it seem like she's in the dark, alone and vulnerable. this was a good affect because with it being on the background of the image it shows more of a sinister setting for the film.I also went round the edge of her face to smooth them out so her face blended into the background. this gave the impression that she was deep in the dark, referring to her not knowing anything and also being in danger.

i then made a new layer once editing her face and the mans by doing the same technique. I added the new layer to insert the text. the text needs to be on a new layer or it becomes complicated to work with. i choose what text i thought would be best for the theme of the trailer and then went to the blending options and edited the look and design that was on the text. i Gave the text a mix of silver and a colour similar to red. The text gave the poster an additional ere feel to it. I then created another layer where i added the blood splat. This was used to convey the message of violence in the film. I also used simple text to add on made up characters names for the film.
The next thing i done was create my own sight and sounds magazine cover.I found this an easy task and liked it much better. I used pictures from the internet of Chris Evans to put that as the background. Once i went onto Photoshop pro i made the background image white as it would be easier to work with. I also edited the background to be 11 by 8.5 inches this was the same size that all magazines that were made.Once i inserted the picture onto the background and lined it up with the background i noticed that it needed to be much lower however if i done that there would be a massive white line at the top. So i used the paint tool and selected different colours and blended the top into red and dark red colours. doing this made the image look good it helped put him in the right space for the magazine. the next thing i done was cut out Chris Evans head and then insert it on top however i discovered that in the original picture the top of his hair was cut out of the image so i decided to keep his head underneath the logo. Then i added the Sight and sound logo knowing i wasn't going to put Chris Evans head over it. This made the editing of this magazine easier. I Noticed from over posters that the B from BFI in the logo went slightly over the edge of the magazine into it's boarded, Which i realized was in the magazine. I then stopped what i was doing and went to the background image and added that boarded to the image. This was done when you tapped on canvas and then create boarded you have to decide by yourself how thick you think the boarder should be to the edges.

Once this was was done all i had to do was add the text i found some text from other magazine and made some up so it's a mix of different stuff. i Made his name big because that was going to be the main focus of my magazine cover and then i added different texts onto different layers saving the different layers as what i wrote. This helped stop any confusion with the labels. I changed some of the text to be red and some to be white and orange so the text matched the Sight and sound logo just like all the other magazines that they done. Once this was complete i had finished my magazine cover for sight and sound.
Lastly i made an Empire magazine cover using the Loki from Thor. in this image i yet again started with a white background keeping the image 11 by 8.5 inches, this was good as this is the same size that the covers would come out as on an actual magazine. I found an image on google where Loki was connected with the background this made the editing easy however it also showed many complications as well. The colours i used for the magazine colour i kept simple and kept with similar colours, green, white and silver. These colours were very neutral except for the green which i used to catch the viewers and for that specific text to stand out.

After i got the image i wanted an added it to the background i adjusted the sizing of the image until i was happy with where it was.I then inserted the Empire logo onto the magazine.the empire is a logo that i found online however when i first found it, it was in red so i had to edit that. The Empire name was on a different tab to my poster therefore i had to drag it across onto my poster. Doing this brought a massive yellow background with it. From here i used the magic wand tool and selected all of the yellow around the logo and deleted it. Next i Choose the size and place that i wanted the Empire logo and started to adjust the colour of the logo. To do this i went on the bevel tool and went down to colour overlay. From here i discovered that the logo was temporarily set as red so i changed the colour to white. This was an easy process to do and i moved the logo ye again to be n the top third on the magazine where it is normally found.

Next i cut out Loki's head with the magnetic lasso tool as it would be easier and quicker to do. However i had to go over this step many times just to get the image right because occasionally the magnetic lasso tool would cut out a lot of Loki's hair. once i was happy with what i cut out i inserted Loki's head over the top of the empire logo just like it is seen in many other magazine coves that they have. This was a very stressful step to do because once you think you have put Loki's head right you discover that his head doesn't line up with his body so i zoomed in until i saw the head and body perfectly lock in together.

The next steps were mainly adding the text in. For each text that i done i inserted a new layer and to keep track of what layer was what i named the layer after what i wrote so i wouldn't get confused. I made the pricing and date small and put that in between the "M" where you would normally see it in other empire magazines. I then got an idea to make the magazine cover a collection magazine and found two other Thor magazines Covers that were collections i then added them into the poster and put a pug over them. This was done by creating another layer and selecting the circle select tool. Once i had done that i tapped on the colour fill tool and choose white. I then choose to create the pug as green as well so it would show of that this was a 3 part magazine cover collection.

The last couple of steps that i done was add the Film logo and add the bar code for the magazine to show the authority of it. I found the bar code on another magazine online so together the bar code off i used an app that was on the computer called the snipping tool this is an easy tool and used a square selection which i thought was perfect for it. From here inserted onto a new tab in Photoshop and then dragged it over to my actually magazine cover. This then brought a long a yellow background again so all i did was use the select tool on Photoshop and went to the upper tabs where it said "select"- "inverse selection"  and then pressed the deleted button. i then found the Thor film logo and added onto the poster cover. This was a good idea because it showed the legitimate film text so it made the magazine look better and i choose to do this for that reason. One i added the film logo i was finished and just looked at the poster to see if there was anything i thought needed to be added. But i was happy with what i ended on and left it as it was.
